Medical students ans counseling

The profile of medical students that seek psychological counseling is an extremely relevant object of study for both mental health services and those working with medical education and training. The current study aims to shed light on how such counseling is provided, and to improve its provision, since psychological support during medical training has important implications for physicians' mental health. This contribution includes understanding the profile of medical students that seek psychological support, their most frequent complaints and difficulties, and the way such care is provided by the Group for Student Psychological Counseling at the School of Medicine, University of São Paulo (Grapal). The discussion draws on psychoanalytical theory to compare the characteristics of the student's emotional life with the care provided. The study concludes that support is needed to help students overcome their difficulties and avoid falling ill. If full advantage is taken of this opportunity, a new perspective, that of transformation, is acquired and incorporated into the future physician's life.
