Round table: a Partnership between Education, Service and Community

ABSTRACT

This article describes an experience of integrating teaching, research and outreach activities through round tables in a Family Health Unit, relating its aspects to sociological contributions of the Theory of Giving. The participants’ perceptions about the experience and its impact on everyday life were captured in the second half of 2013. Learning portfolios, participant observation and notes in the field diary were used for the data collection. The analysis was based on participants’ narratives and thematic records arising from the notes taken. The results were in line with pedagogical references based on the methodology of critical questioning. In evidence was a contribution to building ties of solidarity and encouraging interactive critical stances and tolerance with others. The participants emphasized the everyday relevance of the issues discussed, the exchange of ideas regarding common situations. The conclusions inferred that the dialogue between academic and popular knowledge represents a unique opportunity to seek the development of instrumental or communicative skills and abilities, essential to students as future health professionals.
