Edward Gordon Craig and The Drama for Fools: a portrait of the stage-director as a comic playwright

ABSTRACT

During World War I, the stage-director Edward Gordon Craig wrote a cycle of comic plays for puppets, The Drama for Fools, which remained unfinished. This part of his work was for a long time neglected by most scholars, because of its contradiction with the author's statements against playwrights and literary drama. The article first recalls the history of the Drama for Fools' manuscripts until their recent publication, then analyses Craig's various comic techniques in this work as well as his difficulties to consider himself as a playwright.
