The Musician’s Laboratory

ABSTRACT

Starting from the concept of theatrical laboratory, the article seeks to trace a brief overview of laboratory processes recently practiced by Brazilian musicians in actions of creation, performance and education. There is an increasing expansion in terms of body consciousness and expressiveness among musical performers involved with instrumental theater experiences and collaborative musical work. It is observed how the actor’s training and creative work can contribute to an improvement of the musician's work ritual, trying to question the way he or she uses the main instrument: his or her body. The article also allows us to observe to what extent this laboratorial work, which is part of a fundamental questioning of the creative process in performing arts, includes a potential for political and cultural resistance.
