Trends, challenges and potential of international and comparative education today

The article addresses international and comparative education (ICE) as an academic discipline, considering its challenges and its relevance both in academia and in the political circles. It suggests a working definition of ICE as field of study and research and describes some trends and developments in this field that figure arguably among the most prominent in recent years. It also discusses some of today's central challenges for comparison as a method of production of knowledge and indicates the potential of ICE for the study of education in the 21st century. The article concludes that ICE shows clear signs of rebirth and highlights important intellectual developments both in the conceptual and theoretical bases and in the methodological repertoire of the discipline, as illustrated by multi-level researches.
