Place, Plurality of Existence and Democracy

Abstract

In Brazil, the deepening of neoliberal policies to meet the demands of global companies, agribusiness and finance has led to significant setbacks on national sovereignty and citizenship. Faced with the absence of a national democratic project, the spaces of interest for large corporations are modernized while consequently generating a disorganization of the rest of the territory and of society, as they are uninteresting or residual for these policies. This scenario, then, urgently calls for new democratic, socially just policies that can overcome this perverse logic. In this paper, we propose a small reflection on the importance of considering diversity in terms of places as well as all men, women, institutions and the companies that inhabit them, in order to think and elaborate public policies applicable to actual citizens that allow for the democratic and plural use of the territory.
