Socio-occupational stratification and spatial segregation in the São Paulo Metropolis in the 2000s

Abstract

This article conducts an empirical study of the changes in the spatial distribution and in the patterns of socio-spatial segregation of the social classes in the Metropolitan Area of São Paulo (RMSP) in the 2000s, using the methodology developed by Observatório das Metrópoles for the analysis of socio-occupational stratification. Spatial statistics will be used, mainly the Moran Index, calculated for the census weight areas of RMSP in 2000 and 2010, for spatial analysis of the distribution patterns of classes in the territory. Thus, it is expected to bring methodological contributions for research on stratification and segregation in Brazil, proposing analyses that advance the understanding of the social structure and spatial segregation in the RMSP and in other Brazilian metropolises.
