THE SANTA CASA DE MISERICÓRDIA OF RECIFE: RENTAL-INCOME LOGICS AND CONSERVATION OF ITS HERITAGE ASSETS

Abstract

The Santa Casa de Misericórdia, a charitable institution established in Portugal in 1498, contributed, in the 16th century, to the first urban formations of colonial Brazil. When we were conducting research (2012 to 2016) on the real estate market in the Historic Center of Recife (HCR), we were surprised by the large amount of real estate rented from the Santa Casa de Misericórdia in Recife. This prompted us to ascertain its role as a real estate agent and the implications on the conservation of its heritage assets. Therefore, an analysis was made of how its assets were formed - tributes received as donations/bequests of the faithful for the salvation of the soul, of its rentier logic and of the relationship between the profitability of its properties and the state of conservation of its heritage assets in the HCR.
