Abstract

Through a comparative analysis of residential segregation in São Paulo between 2000 and 2010, this article aims to contribute to the understanding of urban impacts within recent processes of social mobility have occurred in Brazil. The purpose is to analyze urban segregation in five dimensions: uniformity, exposure, concentration, centralization and clustering. Thus, the method of analysis will be both global indexes and typological georeferenced analyzes. Besides indicating changes in specific areas of the urban territory, we will highlight amongst the more general conclusions, the permanency of a relatively high level of segregation of upper classes in the west and south zones of the “expanded center” of São Paulo, and a significant rise in social heterogeneity in peripheral areas, mainly explained by the increases in the income and education of poor people living in these areas.
