‘Who runs the Mineirão?’ A study on the management of urban space from the transformation of Mineirão Stadium to Arena

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the management of urban space, based on the study of the Magalhães Pinto Stadium, the Mineirão in Belo Horizonte (Minas Gerais, Brazil), which underwent a renovation completed in 2012 and turned it into an Arena Multipurpose. Based on interviews and documentary analysis, this study investigates stadium management as a public problem, resulting in an analysis of the change of responsible agents, their roles, responsibilities, network connections and work differences between institutions, in addition to identifying new disputes over demands that configure the character of the new Mineirão arena. The research notes suggest that the State has always had great importance in the management of the Mineirão Stadium, however, its representatives have different actions, even if they have the same objective, which is to represent civil society, and this generates openness because of spaces of power that are used by other actors who then start to influence the stadium management.
