Planetary urbanization or urban revolution? Back to the hypothesis of the complete urbanization of society

Abstract

Neil Brenner and Christian Schmid’s recent work has caused planetary urbanization to (re)emerge as one of the striking narratives in the field of urban studies. This paper presents the authors’ critique regarding methodological cityism and urban age discourse, together with their theses on urbanization, which intend to move towards a new epistemology of the urban. Finally, drawing upon Roberto Monte-Mór’s formulations of the urban and the extended urbanization process also grounded on Lefebvre’s hypothesis that society has been completely urbanized we expose points of dialogue and tension between these theorizations, which culminate in a critique of the contemporary conception of planetary urbanization.
