Microclimate conditions inside an irrigated vineyard covered with a plastic screen

Jales is one of the most important table grape producing regions of São Paulo State, Brazil. The grapevines are usually irrigated and cultivated using the pergola training system and, also, covered with a plastic screen to protect against hail, birds and bat attacks. Nevertheless, the irrigation, the training system and the plastic covering modify the microclimatic conditions inside the vineyard. The present work aimed to compare the meteorological conditions outside and inside a vineyard in the Jales region. The evaluations were carried out in the Tropical Viticulture Experimental Station of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), in Jales, SP. The grapevines were conducted in a pergola training system, covered with an 18% shadow plastic screen and irrigated using micro sprinklers. The meteorological data were registered outside and inside the vineyard using two automatic systems. It was observed that the plastic screen reduced the incident solar radiation (Sr) above the canopy in 20%, in average. The Sr values bellow the canopy were lower than 20% of those registered outside, during the highest leaf expansion period. The air temperature and relative humidity did not differ from those registered outside the vineyard. During the irrigation the air temperature was reduced in 3% and the relative humidity was increased in 4%, in average.
