Collection of fruitful UNESP Jaboticabal
São Paulo State University-UNESP keeps at the School of Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences (FCAV), Jaboticabal, Brazil an Active Germplasm Bank, which works to implement and to maintain the fruit development not only for the purpose of maintaining of the most diverse species, but also to evaluate each species or varieties, regarding the social and economic development potential. The activities in this sense began in the 80s, by the initiative of Professor Luiz Carlos Donadio, and currently, the FCAV maintains one of the largest and most reputable Bags of fruit, an area of 38 hectares. In this collection, still plants which are the result of the breeding program, for example, varieties of guava 'Paluma', 'Rich "and" Twenty-First Century "developed by Professor Fernando Mendes Pereira. In addition to maintenance and study of fruit introduced from other countries, the BAG- FCAV has shown a representative number of native species from several Brazilian ecosystems, some of which are listed as in potential danger of extinction.
A total of 33 families are kept in the collection: Anacardiaceae (8 species), Annonaceae (11 species), Apocynaceae (2 species), Araucaraceae (1 species), Arecaceae (5 species), Bombacaceae (1 species), Cactaceae (5 species), Caricaeae (2 species), Caryocaraceae (1 species), Cecropiaceae (1 species), Clusiaceae (5 species), Ebenaceae (3 species), Elaeocarpaceae (1 species), Fabaceae (5 species), Fagaceae (1 species), Flacourtiaceae (4 species), Junglaceae (1 species), Lauraceae (1 species), Loganiaceae (1 species), Malpighiaceae (4 species), Malvaceae (5 species), Moraceae (6 species), Myrtaceae (29 species), Oxalidadeceae (2 species) , Proteaceae (1 species), Punicaceae (1 species), Rhamnaceae (4 species), Rosaceae (7 species), Ribiaceae (2 species), Rutaceae (6 species), Sapindaceae (7 species) and Sapotaceae (7 species).
The study of behavior and selection of new fruits, as well as techniques for seedling production and management, may result in recommendations for alternative uses for the producers, since it is grounded in solid technical and economic bases, in addition, agricultural diversification is a widely discussed and recommended activity.
