Genetic variability study and browning in 'Fuyu' (Diospyrus kaki) persimmon after cold storage

The present work had the objective of evaluating the occurrence of skin browning, in persimmon, cv. Fuyu and its relation with genetic variability. The experiment was carried on with leaves and fruits obtained from five commercial orchards, being four of them located in the mountain region of Rio Grande do Sul and one in Pelotas area. The choice of the orchards was based on the plants age, between five and eight years and a known occurrence of skin browning of the fruits. The randomized plants were sampled in each orchard for genetic variability evaluation using RAPD technique. Fruits were evaluated for skin browning, after being in cold storage for tree months. A scale of 0 to 5 was used all the locations had browning occurrence varying the severity among the fruits with the exception of persimmon from Pelotas orchard which did not have the problem. The RAPD technique was not efficient to identify the browning character as well as the areas.
