Gravimetric geoid determination in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro and nearby region

Geoidal undulations have been determinated in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro and nearby region, using Stokes formula, which is defined as a function of gravity anomalies. The computation of Stokes integral was carried out by the method of compartmentalization, applied to the researched area, subdivided into cells of 2' x 2'. Field gravimetric information was integrated to ocean data from GEOSAT satellite in order to get the medium and short wavelength components of the geoid spectrum. The long wavelength component was computed through the OSU91A geopotencial model, complete to order and degree 360. The indirect effect of gravimetric reduction was obtained using Helmert's Second Condensation Method. Comparison of the results with data obtained from the GPS/levelling derived geoidal heights points out a difference of ± 6 cm (rms) in the benchmarks.
