Open-access In the arena of the sacred: political power and religious life in the Goiás mines

Abstract

A place where many types of power are concentrated, Vila Boa de Goiás is supported by a political body. The Senado da Câmara, crucial in the genesis of the city's political body, is organized and projected on the urban space, bringing other social bodies under its rule and government. In this process, neither the sacred space of the city nor the groups or members of the religious institutions, are immune to the actions of municipal officers. Those initiatives, however, provoke resistance that condition the conflicts between the secular and the ecclesiastical authorities in the mines of Goiás.
