Based on the transformations occurred in medical attendance in the hospitals of the "Irmandade da Santa Casa de Misericórdia de São Paulo", between the last years of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, this article intends to argue some of the characteristics of the relations between health and illness in the process of urbanization of the city.
