Searching for the magic box: the Estado Novo and the television

The historical analysis of the Television Exhibition (Rio de Janeiro, 1939), an event promoted by the Estado Novo in partnership with the Third German Reich, lets us examine, in addition to data on the history of TV in Brazil, some elements in the understanding of the first relationships between political power and this means of communication in the country. The public demonstration of television to the Brazilians was used as part of the propaganda of the Estado Novo, serving to underscore its alleged superiority over other forms of government, legitimize the régime among various social segments and make up the list of arguments favorable to a Brazil-Germany alignment. In addition, the article aims at throwing new light on the pretensions of the Getulio Vargas dictatorship in relation to political propaganda and on the activities of the press in relation to the control of the Estado Novo in the period prior to the functioning of the DIP.
