This essay is about the seamen culture specially that related to the African slave trade to Brasil from the end of 18th century to the middle of the 19th century. Discussing lacunal sources, the essay tries to understand and define some aspects of the marine culture like nationality and internationalism, social condition, age, work process, behavior, discipline and also the confrontation between the seamen and nature, hierarchy, language, religiosity; quotidian rituals and practical decisions, this late relative to survival and the safeguard of the group and the ship.
