By the Hands of Eugenia: Experiences of Black Women in a Family in Rio de Janeiro (1897-1957)

ABSTRACT

This article seeks to give visibility to the experiences of black women in a family in Rio de Janeiro, in the period from 1897 to 1957, through a bibliographical review and the cross-referencing of diverse documentary sources, such as newspapers, civil and ecclesiastical records. The article problematizes the meanings of the greater attention given to the individual trajectories of black men in studies and questions the silencing produced in relation to black women within families. It understands family as a community of affection and solidarity in the experience of black women, who also played the role of guardians of family memory.
