How Does a Dictatorship End? The Political Transition from the Civil-Military Dictatorship of 1964 and the Construction of the “New Republic”The paper reflects on the political transition process from the civil-military dictatorship that began in 1964, and on the construction of 1985 as the end of the military regime and the beginning of the “New Republic”. The aim is to critically examine the chronological and symbolic landmarks reproduced by academic and school historiographies. It is argued that political speeches and demonstrations created a social memory that was passively accepted and transformed into an interpretation of the period. Thus, the aim is to emphasize the interest in consolidating 1985 as the end of the dictatorship, marked by the inauguration of a civilian president.
