An undesired king: notes on the political career of D. Antônio, Prior do Crato

The article focuses the lineage of D. Antônio, called as Prior do Crato, his role amidst the iberian courts and, mainly, his desire to become the king of Portugal in 1580. He was a sun of D. Luís, one of the most nobleman at this time, so he was received into the courts. However, considering the successory fight in Portugal after the royal defeat in Alcacer Quibir battle, the bastard origin of D. Antônio was the major obstacle to his ambition. The portuguese nobility was profoundly divided in those years. Altough fought, the antonista project had several followers, partly composed by those who were loyal to D. Luís, the father of D. Antônio. This group was sheltered in others european courts where they adopted and spread the so-called sebastianism. Considered part of the large bibligraphy related to d. Antônio and his dream, this paper tries to offer some issues to be discussed or searched on this "rejected king".
