ABSTRACT This article discusses scholars who have been advocating the concepts of race and racism to explain cultural prejudices in ancient Greece and Rome. More precisely, this study debates the arguments for the case of an ancient racist or proto-racist Greece elaborated on by Benjamin Isaac (2004) in The Invention of Racism in Antiquity and Susan Lape (2010) in Race and Citizen Identity in the Classical Athenian Democracy. Thus, for this historiographical perspective, there is much more continuity between ancient and modern racism than we had assumed. This article highlights certain conceptual and argumentative flaws in this approach, maintaining that ethnic relations in ancient Greece are better explained as non-hereditary forms of cultural prejudice rather than as racism, which has a specific history related to European colonization and slave trade.

ABSTRACT The aim of this paper is to discuss the presence of Antiquity in subsequent periods as a defining feature of cultures and epochs. Two concepts are often used in the attempt to grasp such reuse-processes: ‘reception’ and ‘uses of the past’. In consistent dialogue with the international literature in the field, Brazilian studies on the reception and uses of the past have evolved in significant ways, particularly with the contributions of leading scholars such as Francisco Murari Pires, Pedro Paulo Abreu Funari, and José Antônio Dabdab Trabulsi. These fields emerged and were established primarily within the Working Group on Ancient History of the National Association of Historians (GTHA-Anpuh), to express themselves through national and international publications of Brazilian authors. In addition to its analysis of this process in studies on Ancient History and distinct definitions, approaches and dissociations between forms of reception and uses of the past, this article sheds light on one brief case study regarding the city of Curitiba as an example of long term presence of Greek and Roman culture in Brazilian History.
  • Horácio e o uso poético-político do passado Dossiê - A História Antiga Entre O Local E O Global: Integração, Conflito E Usos Do Passado

ABSTRACT In this paper, we analyze how Horace, the Roman poet, took on the Greek and Roman rhetorical and poetical traditions in order to establish his own social role, within a context of widening of boundaries and fabrication of a new political regime, the Augustan Principate. The past, always updated according to circumstances, is redefined by Horace in defense of his status, by using his successful career as his cursus poetarum, mirroring the cursus honorum, to confer him authority to advise the newborn imperial elite, as well as converse with powerful figures. Throughout the first century BC, many novi homines, such as Cicero and Horace himself, socially ascended, mainly due to their political and economic performance. As these men did not have a laudable past on which they could rely to establish themselves socially and politically, they employed rhetorical strategies to rewrite the past, using it as a tool to strengthen their own sides in the game of power.
  • Recepção da Antiguidade: a tirania de Pisístrato na defesa da monarquia moderada no jornal Correio da Liberdade (Porto Alegre, 1831) Dossiê - A História Antiga Entre O Local E O Global: Integração, Conflito E Usos Do Passado

    Vargas, Anderson Zalewski

ABSTRACT This article is the result of research in progress conducted in connection with a project to study both the Reception of Antiquity by newspapers from the Brazilian South in the 19th century and the Rhetoric as textual analysis tool. I analyze specially articles of Correio da Liberdade, published in the city of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in the year 1831. I firstly evaluate some classical rhetorical resources used to persuade the readers; secondly, I analyze the peculiar appropriation of the Athenian tyranny of Peisistratos in an article about the Brazilian political regime of that time revealing part of the chain of receptions to which it belongs.

ABSTRACT This article discusses the gunaikos logos, “woman’s speech”, as a problem in studies of ancient Greek history. Assuming the issue as a contemporary issue, it evokes the possibility of building historical knowledge about the political word and action of women in the polis, from readings of Greek tragedy and comedy as well as funerary epigrams dedicated to women and characteristics of the end of the 5th and early 4th century BC in Athens. It explores the dimension of everyday life as space/time of a constituent politics not necessarily centered on institutional spaces for deliberation and government. It claims that it is possible to perceive through these sources the persistence of female requests that fall short of the political right, validated by the community and the dimension of “common life”, even if the “voices” are not amenable to identification by a female authorship.

ABSTRACT This paper resumes the debate on the Archaeology of Image from two directions: the first is the presentation of the concept, and the second is the proposal for its development based on the association between image and material culture. In this sense, we discuss two basic elements in the archaeological treatment of images, based on the notion of material culture: the concepts of support and context. Finally, considering the previous theoretical debate, we present a case study: the Mediterranean introduction of some images of a particular object - the amphora of Mississippi 1977.3.115 attributed to the Nikoxenos Painter.
  • Os celtas na Antiguidade: cruzando a divisão entre História Antiga e arqueologia Dossier: Ancient History Between Local And Global: Integration, Conflict, And Uses Of The Past

    Karl, Raimund

ABSTRACT One historical actor in Antiquity are the populations of Western-Central Europe, commonly called ‘Celts’ by classical authors. Themselves (mostly) illiterate until approximately the 1st century BC/AD, reports about them, written by foreigners like Polybius, Caesar, Diodorus and others have survived. The study of ‘Celtic’ societies thus can hardly rely on classical historiography, but is mainly based on archaeology. Historical sources and archaeology are difficult to reconcile, even if common themes can be identified in both types of sources. This article examines the differences, but also similarities between the various ‘Celtic’ societies of Europe and their neighbours, and the use of the term ‘the Celts’. The case study of the excavations at Meillionydd in North Wales is used to demonstrate how different types of source material and local and global scales can be integrated into a single, coherent explanatory model.
Tres razones y algunas reflexiones Dossiê - A História Antiga Entre O Local E O Global: Integração, Conflito E Usos Do Passado

ABSTRACT In general terms, the study of Ancient Near East History is questioned under the pretext that it does not respond to ‘national’ interests, that is, such knowledge is futile, absurd or unnecessary because it is far from Latin American history as well as - and more specifically - of the reality and the needs of the present. However, Ancient Near East History can become an extremely fertile and operational field to study and research if we avoid its delimitation based on certain historiographic and anthropological prejudices that are still present in academic media. In this paper, we propose some considerations about the relevance of the study of Ancient Near East History as a kind of ‘laboratory’ from which it is possible to think a whole set of sociocultural characteristics different from our contemporaneity modes of social experience and to recognize the diversity of ways in which human experience can materialize throughout history.

ABSTRACT This article analyzes the discourse developed by DAESH, focused on antiquity. Beyond its radical and destructive nature, the discourse hides greater complexity than expected, since it disguises its true arguments under the false appearance of a religious conflict, participates in current debates regarding the historical narrative built around archeology, pieces and museums, appropriates of ideas taken from the western and colonialist discourse, misrepresents and reinvents the past, and hides not only the reality of an antiquities trade, but also aims to destroy the existence of other perceptions linked to statues, attached to the memory and traditions of local communities, who saw in these statues much more than mere idols of the Ŷāhiliyya, the time before Muḥammad and Islam.

ABSTRACT The aim of this article is to present some speeches elaborated by two Brazilian intellectuals of the late 19th and early 20th century. The first of them is the monarchist Eduardo Prado; the second one, the republican Araripe Júnior. The option to present some ideas of these two authors is justified not only by their differences in the ways they understood Brazil and its approach to the United States, but also because Araripe Júnior was a reader and critic of the monarchist thought and, particularly, of Prado’s thought. Despite the differences between them, there was in common in both approaches a problem of moral and value order that should be resolved through a return to the Brazilian past or through its rupture with it: the effective development of an autonomy of the Brazilian nationality.

ABSTRACT This article focuses on the studies of the doctors Adolfo Bezerra de Menezes and Domingos José Gonçalves de Magalhães, critics of materialistic medicine. Both Loucura sob novo prisma [Madness in a new light] of the former and Alma e cérebro [Soul and Brain] of the latter are peculiar attempts to confront nineteenth-century scientific materialism. Their readings attest the presence of Victor Cousin’s spiritualist philosophy. These are readings that seek to overcome some theses in vogue until then, such as cerebral localizationism and the anatomopathological model. Bezerra de Menezes’ is a reading with a clearly religious interface, proposing an etiology, nosography and treatment for madness based on Spiritism. In both works the soul appears centrally, contradicting the supremacy of the brain as the organ responsible for thinking, as it appeared in cerebral localizationism.

ABSTRACT This article examines the repercussions, in Popular Unity’s Chile (1970-1973), of two events that marked the Cuban cultural field: the “Padilla Affair” and the First National Congress of Education and Culture (1971). The study was conducted within the framework of Intellectual History and focused on the debate that took place between the signatories of the document entitled “Declaración chilena” and a group of writers represented by poet Enrique Lihn. The study found that the Cuban episodes had a significant impact on the Chilean intellectual milieu, at a time when writers and artists sought to influence the direction of Popular Unity’s cultural policy. The problem of the revolutionary ways represented at that time by Cuba and Chile was an underlying issue of the cultural debate.
