Mariana’s Town Council and its pedagogical facet (1889-1930)

Abstract: This article aimed to draw the educational actions implemented by the municipality of Mariana in the First Republic (1889-1930) considering the concept of pedagogical municipality outlined by Justino de Magalhães. We worked with documents from the City Council’s Historical Archive on the construction of schools and their management; the hiring and payment of teachers; the purchase and distribution of teaching materials for the poor students who attended the public lessons. These measures describe the organization of the local school system. The document analysis unveiled the pedagogical facet in Mariana, perceptible through law enforcement and in actions within the inter-municipal scope.
