Study mission in Uruguay: changes in the teaching system of Rio Grande do Sul (1913-1927)

Abstract: This article discusses the study mission in Uruguay, in the years 1913 and 1914, which was organized by authorities of the State of Rio Grande do Sul with the purpose of qualifying and reorganizing the public education system of the State. The research that resulted in this article comprised a large documentary corpus constituted by sources from Uruguay and State of Rio Grande do Sul (RS) from 1913 to 1927. The analysis revealed the study mission has inspired and legitimized changes, especially with regard to didactic-pedagogical aspects and the school material culture of Primary Education, as well as in the organization of teacher training and in putting into circulation a new conception for the teaching of reading and writing by the use of the textbook Queres Ler?.
