Medioestructural Networks in School Dictionaries: Flow of Meanings Among Entries About Male Homosexuals

ABSTRACT

Among the lexicographic structures, the medioestructure is the least addressed in metalexicographic studies considering the volume of research related to aspects of the microstructure, such as the definition and the labels. Our objective, then, is to investigate the reprinting system of type 3 school dictionaries from Programa Nacional do Livro Didático of 2012. We base our study on works in metalexicography (GELPÍ ARROYO, 2000GELPÍ ARROYO, C. La lexicografía. Barcelona: Santillana, 2000.; MARTÍNEZ DE SOUSA, 1995MARTÍNEZ DE SOUSA, J. Dicionários: uma pequena introdução à lexicografia. Brasília: Thesaurus, 2004.), with a focus on the medioestructure and classification of cross-references. Our corpus comprised forty occurrences related to male homosexuals in eleven entries, extracted from five dictionaries (BECHARA, 2011BECHARA, E. C. (Org.). Dicionário escolar da Academia Brasileira de Letras. 3. ed. São Paulo: Companhia Editora Nacional, 2011.; FERREIRA, 2011FERREIRA, A. B. H. Aurélio Júnior: dicionário escolar da língua portuguesa. 2. ed. Curitiba: Positivo, 2011.; GEIGER, 2011GEIGER, P. (Org.). Caldas Aulete: minidicionário contemporâneo da língua portuguesa. 3. ed. Rio de Janeiro: Lexikon, 2011.; RAMOS, 2011RAMOS, R. A. (Ed.). Dicionário didático de língua portuguesa. 2. ed. São Paulo: SM, 2011.; SARAIVA; OLIVEIRA, 2010SARAIVA, K. S. A.; OLIVEIRA, R. C. G. Saraiva jovem: dicionário da língua portuguesa ilustrado. São Paulo: Saraiva, 2010.). We described the cross-references and, based on them, elaborated medioestructural networks to show the flow of meanings among the entries. Our results point to a trend towards the use of implicit cross-references (81.8%) and towards the convergence of meanings to the entry “homosexual”.
