Comparison of precipitation data generated by gpcp versus recorded data for state of rio grande do sul

ABSTRACT

Alternative sources of rainfall data have become increasingly common, being particularly useful for areas with no long and/or continuous series of meteorological data or with low density of weather stations. The aim of this study was to evaluate Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP) data series performance for the Rio Grande do Sul State, south of Brazil, and verify the possibility of using them in case of lack of recorded data. In this work monthly rainfall series from GPCP, provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) with a resolution of 0.5 ° x 0.5 ° latitude-longitude for the period 1979-2010 were used. The analysis were made by comparing precipitation data from 22 meteorological stations located throughout Rio Grande do Sul State. From statistical analysis results it was observed a well GPCP performance in the study region, with a correlation coefficient of about 0.81. Therefore, it is inferred that the GPCP can be used as an alternative source of precipitation data when precipitation is not available.
