Open-access Supplements and conflicts of interest

NOTA DOS EDITORES/EDITORS' NOTE

Supplements and conflicts of interest

Conflicts of interest are a major issue in our field nowadays and a journal such as Revista Brasileira de Psiquiatria (RBP) should take it in consideration every time. Several first line journals produce specific supplements in a topic of interest and sponsored by only one pharmaceutical industry. The Medline® is concerned that this practice may bias the content of these scientific publications. To perform articles indexation, Medline® is requesting the hard version of the journal to check sponsorship.

The RBP supplements have never been sponsored by one pharmaceutical company. Our supplements are planned by the editorial board and edited by invited experts who review all the articles themselves. This procedure is independent of pharmaceutical companies similar to the regular numbers of the journal, therefore supplements are open to support from all the industries.

In order to further improve our disclosure system RBP will adjust to the new Medline rules which require disclosure information on possible conflicts of interests regarding each author and guest editor of the supplements. The Medline suggests that editors and authors must specifically address any financial relationship with each sponsoring organization and any interests that organization represents, as well as with any for-profit product discussed or implied in the articles or supplements. We will be more comprehensive asking editors and authors to disclosure any activity linked to mental health profit organizations in the last three years. Supplement articles will be peer reviewed by the guest editors and by independent reviewers. Authors may be asked to modify their article according to reviewers' suggestions. Helpful guidelines related to disclosure statements have been published by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (more information available at http://www.icmje.org/#conflicts).
