We have reached the ISI!

EDITORS' NOTE

We have reached the ISI!

It is with great satisfaction that we announce the indexing of the Revista Brasileira de Psiquiatria (RBP, Brazilian Journal of Psychiatry), both in the Social Sciences Citation Index of the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), Web of Science and in the Current Contents/Social & Behavioral Sciences citation databases. From 2005 onwards, our articles will be evaluated by the ISI, which determines the impact factors of scientific journals. The ISI represents a seal of approval for scientific journals. RBP will now be classified by CAPES (Brazilian Research Council) as an Internacional B publication. RBP ISI indexing will help attracting submissions from the best Brazilian and international researchers, thereby making available to its readership articles of ever-increasing quality. In turn, graduate courses in the area of psychiatry and related sciences will earn higher scores and be allotted more resources. Thus, a "virtuous circle" is set in motion.

In 1999, the RBP was indexed for the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), which has certainly contributed to improving the quality of Brazilian journals, as well as having promoted the indexing of such journals for international databases. Since 2002, the Selection Committee of MEDLINE (Index Medicus) has considered SciELO indexing a strong endorsement for Latin-American journals. With this point in our favor and having improved the quality of our articles, as well as that of our editorial process, the RBP was indexed for MEDLINE in 2003. That was the first giant step in "internationalizing" the journal (earning a CAPES classification of Internacional C) since it allowed readers the world wide accessment of the abstracts of the RBP articles via PubMed and complete articles via SciELO.

The MEDLINE indexing resulted in increased submissions of articles that met a higher standard, as well as a substantial improvement in the overall quality of the publications. The Editors' Note of January 2003we made clear that the Medline was an extremely important step, but it was not the ultimate objective. The next goal to achieve would be to become indexed for in the ISI. The editorial staff did its utmost, and a series of measures were taken in order to attain this objective. The case reports and letters to the editor sections were reorganized, all original articles had English-language versions , and there was a push to increase the efficiency of the evaluating the submittedarticles. We have also, contracted an advisory body of librarians specialized in the standardization, formatting and editing of bibliographic references.

Although being indexed in the ISI is a great conquest, we still have work to do. The next target is raising the impact factor of the RBP to a level higher than 1, thereby earning a CAPES classification of Internacional A. Earning ISI indexing reflects the maturation of Brazilian researchers and the increased quality of the scientific production in psychiatry and mental health. We would like to express our gratitude to all those who have contributed to the journal attaining this level of excellence. From the directors of the Associação Brasileira de Psiquiatria (ABP, Brazilian Psychiatry Association), who gave their full support to this task, to all who have been involved directly or indirectly in the activities of the journal, in particular the peer reviewers, who work behind the scenes but whose work is nonetheless fundamental. Last but not least, we offer special thanks to the Brazilian and international researchers who have entrusted their articles to our journal. We should all celebrate this victory!
