This article briefly traces the development of the relations between Brazil and Russia, when the latter was still the Soviet Union. It aims to stress the contrast between a distant relationship some years ago and a partnership nowadays. The bilateral relations are depicted and analyzed through political, diplomatic, economic, commercial and technological aspects. The author also presents some key concepts used in the Brazilian foreign policy analysis, such as "development", "continental countries" and "strategic partnership". Athough the post Cold War context may be one of the main reasons for the development of the relationship, the author argues that reciprocal perceptions as continental countries and the role in building a multipolar international order are more relevant factors which have favored the consolidation of a strategic partnership.
