Morph-anatomy of the Bauhinia monandra Kruz: Seed (Leguminosae-caesalpinioideae)

Bauhinia menandra popularly known in the Amazon as "pata-de-vaca" (cow's hoof or foot; paw for animals such as cats and dogs) is indicated among other uses as a medicinal plant in our region. Aiming to contribute to better knowledge, seeds of this species were collected from the germplasm bank sperms of EMBRAPA - CPATU, Eastern Amazon, in the State of Pará. The morph-anatomic study revealed stenospermic seeds, oblong, rounded basis, whole edge, symmetric top, a little accentuated convex profile, and V-shaped hilo in the apical region. The seed coat is monochromic, bright, smooth and consists of two epidermic stracts; lucid line present. The endosperm is continuous, thick, and attached to the seed coat. The embryo is axial and invaginated, with foliate cotyledons and the embryo axle has a rudimentary plumule and imperceptible radicle. Starch grains were seen inside the cotyledons.
