The effect of age and fruit storage time on the physiological quality of hybrid squash seeds

Due to the high volume of imports of squash hybrid seeds, mainly from Japan, studies that prioritize the development of technologies for the production of high quality seeds under tropical conditions should be performed. The objectives of this study were to define the best time of fruit harvest and to verify the fruit storage effect on seed physiological quality of hybrid squash. Fruits of squash cv. Jabras were harvested at 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 days after the anthesis and stored for 0, 15 and 30 days. Germination, vigor (seed weight, radicle length, field emergence, fresh and dry weight of shoot and root) and tetrazolium tests were carried out. Seeds of hybrid squash can be obtained from fruits harvested starting from 40 days after the pollination. The storage of the fruits after the harvest is indispensable for the improvement of seed physiological quality of hybrid squash, and a period of 15 days is the most advisable.
