Open-access Promoting healthy work environments in Primary Health Care: the point of view of healthcare professionals

Abstract

Objective  To analyze elements that influence the configuration of healthy work environments in Primary Health Care from the perspective of healthcare workers.

Methods  A qualitative study conducted in the Brazilian Federal District through focus groups with 100 professionals of family health and oral health teams as part of a quality assessment program.

Results  Collaborative practice, protected meeting times, institutional support, collegiate spaces, and mechanisms for evaluating work in a reflective and formative way are aspects of work organization and management that can foster a healthy work environment. The inadequate structure of services, lack of professionals and materials, absence of feedback from managers, and limited backup care in the healthcare network are constraints that need immediate attention.

Conclusion  The association of the promotion and guarantee of healthy work environments with the implementation of quality assessment programs brings together more democratic and participatory management practices in Primary Health Care. Furthermore, it instigates the proposition of solutions more centered on the needs of those involved, likely to contribute to the improvement of governance and working conditions.
