Performance and nutrient digestibility of diets containing babassu ("Orbignya speciosa") products for agoutis ("Dasyprocta prymnolopha" Wagler, 1831) in captivity

This study aimed to evaluate the performance of agoutis, apparent digestibility of nutrients and the economic viability of diets containing products of babassu: meal, mesocarp and oil. Two experiments continuously assay of digestibility of nutrients and other performance were developed, using the same animals for the two tests. The animals were housed in metabolism cages and randomly distributed in the treatments. The experimental design for both trials was completely randomized with four treatments and four replications. The experimental treatments consisted of four types of diets: control diet, balanced with 16% crude protein, 13% crude fiber and 2500 kcal of digestible energy; control diet with 30% replacement by babassu meal; control diet with 30% replacement by babassu mesocarp; control diet made of 10% for babassu oil. The digestibility of dry matter, crude protein, ether extract and organic matter in diets containing babassu products for growing agoutis, are higher in diets containing oil, while diets with babassu have the lowest rates. The productive performance of agoutis in growth is not influenced by products in diets with babassu oil, bran and mesocarp. The diets of growing agoutis, containing babassu oil present the best financial returns.
