Speech perception evaluation in a deaf child of deaf parents with cochlear implant - case report

Purpose:  speech perception development evaluation of a child with profound sensorineural hearing loss, after 10 months of cochlear implant, with deaf parents users of sign language and establish a mutual relation with adapted therapeutic orientations regarding this family’s characteristics.

Methods:  with the test of Minimal Hearing Capacity - TACAM - and therapeutic document analysis

Results:  the patient passed successfully in all the stimuli showed by the hearing tract in the stages of perception standard training, in the perception standard test, in the polysyllable words identification test and in the monosyllable words identification test. The stimulus gave by the therapist weren’t repeated due to the patient’s short time of attention.

Conclusion:  the results suggest that the patient gets to identify words in closed set based on phonemic1 information, in other words, he/she is able to carry out word identification by hearing. The orientation strategies adapted to the parents’ necessity have been presented as a fundamental aspect to the hearing abilities development of this child.
