“Digital preservation and its practice in the numerous fields of knowledge”Dear readers,
It is with satisfaction what we announce the release of another edition of RDBCI, now closing the editorial period of 2016.
This issue is themed “Digital preservation and its practice in the numerous fields of knowledge” with the purpose of enriching and contributing for the Brazilian digital preservation practices and initiatives, hugely promoted by the Cariniana Network.
This issue’s organization, entirely focused on the theme of digital preservation, was done in partnership with the Cariniana Network Coordination of the Brazilian Institute of Information in Science and Technology (IBICT).
Is worth remembering that the Cariniana Network "arose from the need to create in the Brazilian Institute of Information in Science and Technology (IBICT) a services network of digital preservation of Brazilian electronic documents, in order to ensure its long-term continued access."4
Thus, the implantation project for the Network was elaborated based on an decentralized infrastructure, using distributed computing resources. A distributed digital preservation network needs the participation of the institutions that hold these documents and their infrastructure, in a standardized and secure environment that guarantees permanent access and monitored storage of digital files.
With the support from FINEP, in January of 2013, IBICT joined the Stanford University LOCKSS program5. From then on, service was extended to the institutions that produced open access publications.
With that, the Network was initiated by 9 (nine) institutions distributed around the Brazilian regions, aiming at framing the LOCKSS boxes for initial digital preservation of journals using the Open Journal System (OJS) platform, which was also translated for the Electronic System of Journal Publishing (SEER), and is coordinated by IBICT, with the goal of accomplishing electronic journal flux managing.
With the Cariniana project, preservation projects for other documents, such as dissertations and theses, institutional memories, archival files and electronic books were also started.
From its 3 (three) years of existence, Cariniana Network allowed for many meetings and events in the national and international sphere amongst its partners and collaborators, through which was created the DRÍADE Research Network.
The Research Network DRÍADE aims for the sharing and promotion of studies and practices, as well as the integration of contents of digital institutional memory in syndicated and federated form. The DRÍADE6 Network is registered in the CNPq Research Groups Directory, formally as Group of Research, Studies and Digital Preservation Practices, including 09 lines and about 90 participants.
For this reason, RDBCI, in partnership with IBICT, proposes the construction of an issue on the practices of Brazilian Institutions to consolidate the efficient permanence of digital preservation as a constant service in the realization of the Institutional memory’s safekeeping and perpetuation registered in these practices which constitute this issue and counts with the participation of about 100% of researchers of the DRÍADE Research Network and the Cariniana Network.
With paper submissions, it was possible to perform an initial analysis, allowing that for the works to be divided into 4 (four) categories of thematic affinity:
Digital preservation policies;
Digital preservation competencies;
Digital preservation practices and,
Preservation of digital journals.
Thus, in this issue we have counted with 11 (eleven) new articles, published in the Articles section.
We would also like to share that RDBCI was submitted for evaluation in SciELO, and has currently been successful in the technical criteria, waiting now only for the scientific evaluation, which motivates us to remain seeking improvements for the journal, always counting with the partnership and collaboration of authors and editorial team for that to happen. We also highlight that we are working to make this edition a bilingual issue.
The first category, “DIGITAL PRESERVATION POLICIES” counts with a paper titled Preservation, conservation and restoration policies: UFBA’s artistic and literary patrimony, by Lidia Brandão Toutain, Ana Maria Cerqueira Lima, Maria Alice Santos Ribeiro (Federal University of Bahia), bringing to light an initiative of Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), which started a project aiming specific management and preservation policies for its collection since the Institution, which dates back to the 19th century accumulates significant and representative collections of different areas of knowledge. A mapping of the cultural, artistic, movable and immovable assets was made in the UFBA campuses in Salvador, resulting in an inventory which presents identifying components of typology and individual classification, conservation status of academic unities’ copies, and the field of conservation, preservation and restoration collection priorities. The results of this project will be available in the institutional repository for consultation by the internal and external community.
The second category, on “DIGITAL PRESERVATION COMPETENCIES”, presents the article The role of librarians in scientific data management by Fabiano Couto Corrêa (Rio Grande Federal University), which brings an analysis of the librarian action possibilities along with researchers for an efficient scientific data management and identifies that this data requires planning solutions which include specific knowledge on the repository choice and storage techniques for the conservation and permanent use of data as key for the success of a research project.
The second article in this category is titled Implementing digital preservation in repositories: knowledge and practices, by Caterina Groposo Pavão, Sônia Elisa Caregnato e Rafael Port da Rocha (Rio Grande do Sul Federal University) and reflects on the constant search for knowledge domain and the best practices by the researchers and those responsible for the digital preservation of repositories. It presents a conceptual model of digital preservation from fundaments and models developed in influent projects from the area, which allows to generally identify the main digital preservation knowledge domains and finally, points to the need to fortify the relationship between this knowledge in repositories and the practices of the many projects developed globally.
This section’s third article is called Competencies for preservation and digital curation by Sonia Araujo de Assis Boeres e Murilo Bastos da Cunha (University of Brasília) and discusses questions on the competencies the information professional must have to carry out the digital preservation and curation process. Said article discusses the rise of professions (under the Sociology view), the need of work for the accomplishment of being human (Psychology) and the proficiencies of those who work with Information Sciences to ensure the preservation of digital information in the information units.
The last article Digital curation and digital preservation: conceptual intersections from Thayse Natália Cantanhe de Santos (University of Brasília) discusses and notes that there are preservation and curation concept intersection and differentiation points which highlight and indicate why a concept would show after another and how each presents itself in face of the importance given to the management of voluminous data, specially scientific data, concluding that there’s more unity in the understanding of what is digital curation than the preservation concepts, and that the action fields of both complement the management of digital information as a whole.
Section three is about the “DIGITAL PRESERVATION PRACTICES”, and carries the article Digital Preservation Repository Management by Miguel Ángel Márdero Arellano and Alexandre Faria de Oliveira (Brazilian Institute of Information Science and Technology) and discusses the international experiences of implementation of digital preservation practices in repositories based on a bibliographic survey on the beginning of preservation practices in digital repositories. Concluded that it is necessary to apply more than one digital preservation strategy to sustain the flexibility in integration of functions and services that go beyond the repository.
The next article in this section is titled Social media in times of libraries 2.0: a study into the Brazilian Federal Education Instituitions’ libraries bringing future perspectives for digital preservation, by Laura Vilela Rodrigues Rezende, Dalton Lopes Martins and Marcel Ferrante Silva (Goiás Federal University) and presents the main challenges in the social participation in the Web by the University Libraries of Brazilian Federal Education Institutes, as well as the transformations regarding these institutions’ actions, especially in what concerns the public. It also reflects on the importance of digital preservation, not only of its archives, but also of the relevant registries of established relations between libraries and their public through social media.
This section’s third article For a complete preservation of the new media art: notes on art technology, by Pablo Alexandre Gobira de Souza-Ricardo (Minas Gerais Federal University) presents reflections from the research on art and its preservation, with the focus on what it could be - and mean - an integral digital preservation of digital art.
The last article of this section is titled The Legatum initiative and digital preservation of audiovisual public archives by Rubens Ribeiro Gonçalves da Silva (Bahia Federal University), Adriana Lúcia Cox Hollós (National Archives-RJ), Ricardo Sodré Andrade (Bahia Federal University) and Neiva Pavezi (Santa Maria Federal University). It presents the course and partial results of scientific research on digital preservation public audiovisual files, which main product is an open repository, multi- languages and collaborative model, the Legatum.
The next and last thematic section is about “DIGITAL JOURNALS PRESERVATION”, and presents two articled. The first is titled Registering, indexing and digitally preserving RDBCI: Production indicators of 2003 to 2016 by Gildenir Carolino Santos and Danielle Thiago Ferreira (Campinas State University) which analyzes the edited and published production of RDBCI: Digital Journal of Librarianship and Information Science in its thirteen years of existence, on three aspects: strategic, preservation and indexing indicators, in order to build managing indicators of the journal’s editorial flow, as well as foment the growing number of national and international open access scientific publications.
The next and last paper of this section is Technical aspects of digital preservation of brazilian journals in information science by Priscilla Mara Bermudes Araujo and Rosali Fernandez de Souza (Brazilian Institute of Information Science and Technology) and brings some technical aspects of digital preservation of electronic scientific journals in Information Science published in Brazil, presenting conceptualizations and characteristics of digital objects, models, patterns and formats internationally recognized besides the strategies that can be employed as important tools for the digital preservation of electronic journals highlighting the importance of the usage of said strategies to guarantee the appropriate keeping, the integrity, the usability and access to these publications.
