Quilombos in Brazil and socio-environmental rights in Latin America

Abstract

The Latin America’s countries are very similar in their social and historical formations, regardless of whether they have been colonized by Spain, Portugal, England, Holland or France. The substitution of peoples and nature is the mark of this colonization. Not only the indigenous peoples, but also other peoples were constituted in the colonial history. Resistance of Afro-descendants to slavery formed peoples, the “quilombos”. In the twentieth century a unit of resistant peoples was formed and promoted a significant change in legal structures in Latin America and international regulations.
