Human Dignity and European Union Law: Life and Biopolitics

Abstract

The concept of human dignity has been recently recognized by the European Union Law thanks to in particular the European Charter of Fundamental rights (“Charter”). At the same time, the Court of Justice of the European Union (“CURIA”) has frequently used this notion in order to regulate certain European Union members’ policies and other economical rights and liberties of the European Union. Our paper aims to show how human dignity can be reframed as a component of a biopolitics aiming to govern and enhance certain aspects of the human and social existences.
