The two demons theory: resistances to the Brazilian transitional justice process

Abstract

The Brazilian transitional justice process is constantly challenged by opposing speeches capable of symbolizing the so-called “theory of the two demons”, created in Argentina after the end of the 1976-1983 regime. This research questioned how the use of this theory was different in the transition experiences of Argentina and Brazil. The work used bibliographic and documentary sources, especially analyzing the political speeches broadcast through newspapers and records of the Brazilian National Congress. It was concluded that there was an approximation in the use of the theory of the two demons in both countries, although this occurred at different times and with different ends.
