The (indigenous) question of the Manifesto Antropofago

Abstract

Tupi or not tupi? the most famous aphorism of Oswald de Andrade’s Manifesto Antropófago, raised a question that ended up being obliterated through its conversion in an identitarian motto. What we propose here is to map the frame of references surrounding the question, the debates that it intervenes in, and especially how it connects to the Manifesto’s various anthropological sources in order to restitute its quality of an eminently indigenous matter and its ability to question identitarian and nationalistic views and appropriations of indigenous people.
