Achievements of REBEn

Telma Ribeiro Garcia

Director of Publications and Social Communication of ABEn (2010-2013). Scientific Editor of REBEn. Brasília-DF, Brazil

The Brazilian Nursing Journal (REBEn) is the oldest vehicle for dissemination of the Brazilian nursing's scientific production. The Brazilian Nursing Association's (ABEn) goal, since previous administrations, is to enable its constant improvement, in order to meet the growing demands of the scientific community.

Launched in 1932, REBEn will celebrate its 80th anniversary in 2012, a period of time during which it has been a national reference for researchers, teachers and clinical nurses, ensuring the dissemination of technical and scientific discussions and political demands of the category.

To achieve its internationalization, the indexation of REBEn was broadened, in 2011, into two relevant databases, thereby providing greater visibility to the scientific production published on it: Sociedad Iberoamericana de Información Cientifica (SIIC Data Bases), based in Argentina; and the Red de Revistas Científicas de América Latina y El Caribe, España y Portugal (Redalyc), based in Mexico.

Due to its history and linkage to a scientific-cultural entity, it has credibility and impartiality to spread nursing knowledge and of other scientific areas, both to Brazil and other countries. These conditions allowed REBEn to be selected to be funded by CAPES/CNPq for five years, to enhance and maintain its quality and internationalization.

For its improvement, the 2011 plan to intensify REBEn anticipated the expansion of the yearly number of manuscripts. An electronic journal (e-REBEn) was planned to be released in order to publish three hundred manuscripts a year, alternating, each month, the publication of twenty-five articles in print and twenty-five in the electronic journal. That goal was not achieved, due to technical and financial problems but continues to be a commitment by the ABEn Board for the coming years.

On the other hand, the professionalization of the administrative procedures of REBEn, an undeniable need, was achieved in part, by hiring a company that is specialized in page layout, and a librarian for the normalization of the manuscripts.

As a result of this continued work, since previous administrations of ABEn, it is worth mentioning that, in 2011, REBEn migrated from the Extract5-B1 to the Extract 6-A2 of CAPES QUALIS list of journals. The competent performance of the Associate Editors and ad hoc consultants groups, all of them with a PhD, during the year 2011, supported the actions of the Journal, sharing their knowledge in specific areas.

Those in the current management of ABEn and REBEn, and those to come, will keep a systematic effort so that the Journal, not only accompany, but meets the demands of each time.
