THE HISTORICAL SENSE OF DEVELOPMENTALISM AND ITS CURRENT MEANING

ABSTRACT

The article presents the historical formation of the Brazilian developmentalism and discusses its relevance for the Brazilian economy. Therefore, recovers its origins, showing that results from the confluence of interventionists, nationalists and in defense of industrialization ideas that coalesced in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, during the agro-export period. Then, from the developmentalist concept it argues that this as a historical phenomenon, able to adapt itself to the changes in the Brazilian economy during the twentieth century, not being restricted to the import substitution industrialization period. Thus, we conclude that today’s challenge is its update face to the economic changes in recent decades, particularly with regard to deindustrialization.
