The diversification of the productive structure in Brazil: preliminary remarks

ABSTRACT

This study aims to examine the extent of diversification of production operations in Brazil, of 2006-2010. In 2007, IBGE started adopting version 2.0 of the CNAE, disseminating new statistical information of active units, in especially relating to derived variables "non-diversified company" and "diversified company". It is concluded that most companies in the country has a low level of diversification; most Brazilian companies is "specialized" in their basic economic activities (single local unit). Businesses operating with "more of a local unit", almost two thirds of them are classified as "non-diversified companies", in 2010. As regards the "diversified companies", it is observed that the larger the size, greater has been the diversification, but there is, in general, companies of all sizes have been keen to expand more through "diversification of activity and mixed", and less through "spatial diversification". Considering diversification by sector of economic activity, construction companies and manufacturing industry have achieved higher levels of diversification, in 2010.In general, different sectors have different characteristics with respect to the type of diversification and size of the companies.
