The body dangerous: Salome dances

Richard Strauss's operatic adaptation of Oscar Wilde's Salome breaks all the rules in the representation of the female body: this body is not only stared at by the 'male gaze' but stares back, with powerful and deadly results. This Salome offers a challenge to canonical theories of both 'the gaze' and feminine objectification.
