Open-access Gender violence and sport activism of female soccer players in Argentina and Brazil

Abstract:

Gender violence in soccer is a phenomenon that transcends the boundaries of the pitch, manifesting itself in both sporting and non-sporting environments. This article aims to analyze the actions taken by female players from first-division teams in Argentina and Brazil in the face of two cases of gender violence. To structure this article, we searched for posts by the players and their respective clubs on the social media platform Instagram, and retrieved news reports from the main newspapers in both countries. To analyze the material collected, we used the discourse analysis method. Among the conclusions, we highlight that the female players’ actions are supported by the demands of the feminist movements in both countries and are configured as a form of sports activism oriented towards issues of gender and LGBTQIA+ diversity.
