Open-access Vivi and Amelinha: lesbianism in Brazil in the 1930s

Abstract:

This work seeks to analyze the construction of representations about lesbians and lesbianity in the brazilian legal medicine discourse of the 1930s, as well as identify which meanings were used in this production of sexual subjects. To do this, we selected the account of the relationship between two lesbians from Salvador, Bahia, present in the book A Inversão dos Sexos (1935), by the doctor Estácio de Lima, taking into account the disciplinary and bourgeois power/knowledge that supported pathological views on bodies non-cisheterosexuals and the intersection of inequality markers of the period. As a research technique, we employed some french discourse analysis (DA) operators.
