Women's movements made important contributions to ending the period of authoritarian rule in Latin America, but their participation in the reconstruction of democratic politics has been more limited than expected. This paper argues that the enormous influence exerted by technocratic elites in the democratization process in Latin America has represented an obstacle to the improvement of women's status in the region. Gender-biased assumptions and practices have been only partially addressed, in part because the policy-making process is under the control of economists, a professional group with a particularly unfriendly stand towards gendered analysis. It is suggested that reforms within economics may help in the task of making democracy more responsive to the demands of women.

The article analizes the conditions in which women farmers incorporate into México’s exports processes. This sector has a great need of labour at the national level, which in turn brings about many migration fluxes in which indigenous women play an important role. The study shows how this feminine incorporation into the labour market triggers gender as well as ethnic inequalities that manifest themselves in a segmentation within the branches and sectors of the national economy. Also, the article describes the means to which indigenous women turn to in order to counteract the actual and symbolic violence they are submitted to.

This study starts out considering the changes which have occurred in the field of sexualities as a consequence of the feminist movement of the past 50 years, mainly the collapse of frontiers between man-public and woman-private. From this point, it demonstrates how the displacements of the feminine, in the midst of the crisis of the masculine, constitute a new topos to think the difference between the sexes in contemporary culture. The study proceeds with the idea, based on some of the main theories about the issue of difference nowadays, that we are not in a territory which is totally anchored by ‘masculine domination’, neither in one characterized by total ‘indifference’. A new possibility of differentiation arises, and with it, a new sketch of the feminine.

We use the theory of complexity to analise gender questions, showing that those are built by society in an exchange of interactions between nature and culture. The bioanthropological rootsand and the sociocultural characteristics contain different experiences, knowledge and wisdom, in a complex organization in which oposition does notmean extinction, and difference does not imply hierarchy. We can apply Morin's "tetralogical ring" concept, which admits disorder, organization, order and interaction to the understanding of the impasse between masculine and feminine, humans and non-humans, towards a paradigmatic change in the social and environmental relations.
  • Mulheres atletas: re-significações da corporalidade feminina Artigos

    Adelman, Miriam

How does women's participation in sport contribute to the re-signification of women's corporality? Considering Susan Brownmiller's notion that femininity, in modern society, can be understood as an "aesthetic of limitation", I also work with notions of gender and corporality taken from recent work by Susan Bordo and Judith Butler, in an attempt to identify changes in women's practices and representations of the female body propitiated by sporting activity. I analyze the testimonies of Brazilian women athletes, most of whom can be considered professionals, from two sporting fields: on the one hand, equestriennes engaged in the elite sport of showjumping, and on the other, women involved in the popular sport of volleyball. I also look at cultural images of women athletes as currently produced in mass media. he evidence that I obtain through field work leads me to identify conflicting tendencies of "deconstruction" of certain aspects of the above-mentioned aesthetics of limitation and persistent cultural concern for women's "masculinization" through sport.
  • Amamentação e sexualidade Artigos

    Sandre-Pereira, Gilza

The present article deals with breastfeeding and its relation with sexuality in an anthropological approach, based on interviews carried out with men and women in Brazil and France. In modern occidental society, double function of breast - maternal and erotic -, as well as representations that man and woman have of the maternity, come out as the base for important alterations in couple sexuality during the breastfeeding period. As maternal milk has a strong symbolic meaning in different cultures, breastfeeding goes beyond biological and nutritional contexts. Among others corporal substances, milk has an important role in the representations of the body, originating blood relations and interdictions in different societies. The analysis of Brazilian and French interviewees discourse reveals also the presence of some taboos when these two practices - sexuality and breastfeeding - are taken into consideration. The reflection on this matter is essential for the discussion of man-woman relations in the current Brazilian breastfeeding incentive context.

Alvarez, Sonia E; Friedman, Elisabeth Jay; Beckman, Ericka; Blackwell, Maylei; Chinchilla, Norma Stoltz; Lebon, Nathalie; Navarro, Marysa; Tobar, Marcela Ríos

This article examines the Latin American and Caribbean Feminist Encuentros as critical transnational sites for the collective re-imagining of feminist politics in the region. Paying special attention to the most recent regional gathering, held in Juan Dolio, Dominican Republic in 1999, we analyze the major political and philosophical debates that have emerged during twenty years of Encuentros: 1) shifting conceptions of movement "autonomy" and feminisms' relationship to the larger women's movement and to other actors in civil and political society, the State, and international institutions; 2) controversies generated by the movements' recurrent "crises of inclusion" and "crises of expansion"; and 3) debates centered on differences, inequalities, and power imbalances among women, in general, and among feminists, in particular. While this essay explores how the Encuentros have marked feminist debates in the region, it also argues that they are, in themselves, productive transborder sites that not only reflect but also (re)shape Latin American and Caribbean feminist discourses and practices.

  • Feministas en el Foro

    Celiberti, Lilian; Vargas, Virginia

The article deals with the ways of incursion of the feminist plurality's significant expressions in the World Social Forum. These incursions express the changes in the subjectivities and in strategies of struggle that feminist movements in particular and social movements in general begin to develop, in the frame of a globalised world and in the new millennium. It's an unprecedented process, that is promoting the development of new paradigms for collective action, that combines local and global issues, the interconnection of multiple agendas and the recovery of a more profound dimension of economic, social, cultural and symbolic justice, broadening, in this process, the concept of politics, the political and the power. The article sets discussion around the ways in which social movements converging in the Forum - that drag old dynamics and at the same time recreate new paradigms - work in politics and open the possibility of re-inventing an emancipation map and a social conception, capable of competing with neo-liberal consensus and with the single thought, recuperating diversity and plurality of social individuals and actors.
  • ¿Quien quiere genero cuando puede tener sexo?

    Garrido, Lucy

Based on an overview about the definition of both network and work within feminist movement networks, and about some of the last regional coordination experiences, the article sets out the question: "Articulation: how, where from and what for". Three large working guidelines are suggested, that, in several cases, guide or might guide regional feminist action. Insertion in World Social Forum takes part of the incidence strategy that Marcosur Feminist Articulation has adopted in order to answer this question. And election of subject matter and style of the campaign "Your mouth, fundamental against fundamentalisms", is a way to respond to the one that says: "who wants gender, when one can have sex?"
  • Foro Social Mundial: discursos y gestos de diversidad

    León, Irene

    Resumo em Inglês:

The text presents the World Social Forum as a laboratory of ideas, that has generated a decentralized and heterogenious process, with many actors/ actresses, political and thematic focus. The inclusion of feminist proposals in this scenario, where ideas for the reshaping of a different globalization are generated, the participation of the feminist movement in the building of alliances, in the creation of critic opinions and of new proposals, is a necessary effort so that the projection of a different world can be includent and have gender perspective.

The WSF emphasises on critic to the neoliberal model and on the construction of alternatives. From both propositions, it is a space with which feminism identifies and to which it contributes with independent experiences and thoughts. At the same time it is vitalized with the challenges to put in a global perspective its thematic, sectoral, local processes, and to expand and recuperate the transforming 'gender' potential. They are challenges that express themselves, among others, in the forms of interacting in the world scene and in the treatment of issues like the economy and diversities.

    Nobre, Miriam; Faria, Nalu
