Physical Education student-teachers' beliefs about sports teaching

The main objective is to analyze undergraduate Physical Education students' beliefs or prior knowledge with regard to sports teaching when entering university. Descriptive-interpretative qualitative methodological research procedures were adopted. Five undergraduate Physical Education students from a public university were investigated. The instruments used were: semi-structured interview, systematic observation and memory stimulation procedures. Content analysis technique and the classes of analysis were determined a priori. It was verified that the subjects investigated believe motor contents or basic sport skills must be emphasized in the sport initiation process. The personal practice experience and the observation were the sources for structuring their classes. The subjects have a pedagogical knowledge about sports teaching obtained from a modeling process.
