Qual é a maneira mais comum de interpretar as relações e o intercâmbio entre as culturas? Apesar do difundido "backlash", o modelo ainda prevalente é o multiculturalismo, em uma de suas duas versões principais: (1) a versão "assimilacionista", que tende a eliminar todas as diferenças culturais, reduzindo-as ao domínio (colonial?) da cultura ocidental, e (2) a versão assim chamada "diferencialista", muito em moda hoje em dia (tendo em conta a crise de identidade do Ocidente), segundo a qual as culturas são como "peças de museu", "ilhas cognitivas" fixas e imutáveis, a serem deixadas por conta própria. Quais são os defeitos desta perspectiva multicultural, especialmente na versão diferencialista? Exatamente a pretensão ideológica de acreditar que as culturas sejam como mônadas de Leibniz, sem portas ou janelas. Isso é justamente o contrário do que sustentava, por exemplo, Gandhi, quando afirmava que uma cultura não pode sobreviver se acha que pode excluir as demais.

What is the usual way of interpreting the relationships and exchanges between cultures? Despite the widespread "backlash", multiculturalism is the model that still prevails in one of its two main versions: (1) the "assimilationist" version, which tends to eliminate all cultural differences, reducing them to the colonial domain of the Occidental culture, and (2) the so called "differencialist" version, a current trend (taking into account the identity crises of the West), according to which cultures are like "museum pieces", fixed and immutable "cognitive islands", to be left on their own. What are the defects of this multicultural perspective, especially in the differencialist version? Exactly the ideological pretension of believing that cultures are like monads of Leibniz, without doors or windows. This is precisely the opposite of what Gandhi held, for example, when he said that a culture cannot survive if it believes it can eliminate the others.

La diversidad cultural constituye un asunto central y de importancia cada vez más creciente en la dinámica y evolución de las sociedades actuales. La gestión de este hecho, sin embargo, se realiza desde perspectivas y respuestas muy variadas y, no pocas veces, de dudosa eficacia en el terreno de la convivencia ciudadana para una ciudadanía inclusiva. En este artículo se analizan las tres respuestas más comunes a este desafío, que se han denominado y caracterizado como "asimilación subalterna", "racismo culturalista" y "estética intercultural". Asimismo, se han identificado algunas de las limitaciones, carencias y problemas que estas respuestas evidencian. Frente a estas se destaca la necesidad de desarrollar una respuesta interculturalista crítica y transformadora, que se considera una alternativa válida para el desarrollo de una convivencia basada en el diálogo, la igualdad y el reconocimiento de las diferencias.

Cultural diversity is a central issue with ever-increasing importance in the dynamics and evolution of current societies. However its management is done from very different perspectives and responses, not infrequently, of dubious effectiveness in the field of civic coexistence for an inclusive citizenship. In this article the three most common responses to this challenge are analyzed, which have been named and characterized as "subordinate assimilation", "culturalist racism" and "intercultural esthetics". This way, some limitations, shortcomings and problems highlighted by these challenges were identified. In this context, there is the need of developing an intercultural, critical and transformative response, which consists in a valid alternative for the development of a coexistence based on dialogue, equality and recognition of differences.

De acuerdo al artículo una utopía multicultural, entendida como una estructura social y jurídica que garantiza a todos los grupos culturales y religiosos suficiente espacio para poder desarrollar todas sus prácticas tradicionales, es una anti-utopía en la cual los derechos de muchos pueden ser violados en nombre de la cultura. Una política multicultural que no viole los derechos de los individuos debe reconocer y respetar su libertad para definir y redefinir constantemente su identidad del modo que consideren apropiado.

According to the article a multicultural utopia, understood as a social and legal structure that guarantees to all cultural and religious groups enough space to develop all their traditional practices, is an anti-utopia in which rights can be violated on behalf of culture. A multicultural policy that does not violate the rights of individuals must recognize and respect their freedom in order to constantly define and redefine their identity in an appropriate way.

Há séculos, Homero afirmou ser a civilidade a característica que distingue os homens dos animais. Os Ciclopes, afirmava o poeta grego, eram considerados monstros selvagens não porque não praticavam a navegação, mas porque ignoravam a hospitalidade. Hoje, mais de vinte séculos depois, a Interculturalidade busca resgatar a virtude da civilidade como forma de garantir a convivência pacífica entre maiorias e minorias, superando, assim, as limitações do Multiculturalismo e sua proposta da tolerância. Nesse contexto, o objetivo deste trabalho é defender a virtude da civilidade como pressuposto para a garantia efetiva dos direitos fundamentais de todos os membros de uma sociedade pluricultural.

For centuries, Homer said it was civility that distinguishes men from animals. The Cyclops, said the Greek poet, were considered wild monsters not because they practiced navigation, but because they ignored the hospitality. Today, more than twenty centuries later, Interculturality aims to rescue the virtue of civility as a way to guarantee the peaceful coexistence of majorities and minorities, and overcoming the limitations of Multiculturalism and its defense of tolerance. In this context, our objective is to defend the virtue of civility as a precondition for the effective guarantee of fundamental rights of all members of a multicultural society.

Este artigo dá conta de uma reflexão teórica sobre a convivência entre culturas diferentes em Portugal. A partir de uma breve caracterização da imigração em Portugal, num primeiro momento procurou-se definir e distinguir os diferentes modelos teóricos de integração para, num segundo momento, analisar concretamente as políticas públicas relativas à integração dos imigrantes na sociedade portuguesa. Por último, partindo da constatação de que os estudos dão conta de comparações entre culturas e não tanto da convivência entre elas, procurou-se refletir sobre as razões subjacentes à quase total ausência de investigações cujo enfoque seja a convivência entre culturas.

This article presents a theoretical reflection on the coexistence of different cultures in Portugal. From a brief characterization of immigration in Portugal, at a first moment, an attempt was made to define and distinguish different theoretical models on integration in order to, at a second moment, concretely analyze public policies on the integration of immigrants in the Portuguese society. Finally, based on the fact that studies focus on comparisons between cultures rather than on the coexistence between them, an attempt was made to reflect on the subjacent reasons for the almost total absence of researches with focus on the coexistence of cultures.

L'articolo descrive la transizione migratoria dell'Italia, che l'ha trasformata da paese d'emigrazione in uno dei principali poli attrattivi dell'attuale scenario migratorio internazionale; dà conto dell'impatto demografico e sociale dell'immigrazione, nonché del suo significato culturale - la trasformazione dell'Italia in un paese multietnico e multireligioso -; ripercorre l'evoluzione degli atteggiamenti degli italiani verso gli immigrati; affronta, infine, alcuni nodi irrisolti della vicenda migratoria italiana, con particolare riguardo al tema del governo dell'immigrazione e del suo impatto sul mercato del lavoro.

This article describes the migratory transition in Italy, which transformed it from an emigration country into one of the most attractive poles in the current international migration scenario; presents the demographic and social impact of immigration, as well as its cultural meaning - the transformation of Italy into a multi-ethnical and multi-religious country; focuses on the evolution of the attitudes of the Italian people towards the foreigners; and finally addresses some non-resolved issues of the Italian migration reality, with emphasis on the issue of immigration governance and its impact on the labor market.

Partindo do pressuposto de que alteridade é um fenômeno universal e de que todos os grupos constroem categorias para classificar a si e ao outro, no presente artigo faz-se uma reflexão sobre a experiência singular de imigração estudantil no Brasil, a partir de uma perspectiva relacional que busca analisar as percepções e as configurações identitárias desses estudantes na sua relação com a população local que os classifica como africanos. Os dados analisados neste trabalho permitem refletir sobre a presença dos universitários africanos no Brasil, em geral, e em Porto Alegre, em particular, a partir de uma tríplice identidade: identidade nacional, identidade continental e identidade racial.

Assuming that otherness is a universal phenomenon and that all groups construct categories in order to classify themselves and the others, this article presents a reflection on the singular experience of student migration in Brazil from a relational perspective that seeks to analyze the perceptions and identity configurations of these students in their relationship with the local population, who classifies them as Africans. The data analyzed in this work allows for a reflection on the presence of African university students in Brazil, in general, and in the state of Porto Alegre, in particular, from a triple identity: national identity, continental identity, and racial identity.

O presente artigo apresenta alguns dos resultados da pesquisa de doutorado intitulada "Diálogo família e escola em contexto de diversidade", realizada no Departamento de Didática e Organização Educativa da Universidade de Barcelona. O foco principal da pesquisa foi analisar as formas de comunicação entre famílias latinoamericanas e escolas catalanas para alcançar o apoio educativo dos menores imigrantes; descrever, compreender e interpretar as representações das famílias e de professores/a de educação primária acerca da comunicação em contexto de diversidade cultural e as implicações destas representações para o processo de construção do diálogo intercultural. O estudo de uma temática desta natureza se faz relevante dentro do âmbito das políticas global, nacional e local, através do desafio posto para a convivência e o diálogo intercultural em âmbito geral, em particular, no âmbito da educação.

This article presents some of the results of the PhD thesis entitled, "Dialogue, family, and school in the context of diversity", done at the Department of Didactics and Educational Organization of the University of Barcelona. The main focus of the research was to analyze the forms of communication between Latin-American families and Catalan schools in order to gain educational support for immigrant minors; to describe, understand and interpret the representations of families and primary school teachers on communication in a context of cultural diversity and the implications of these representations for the construction process of intercultural dialogue. The study of a theme of this nature is relevant within the context of global, national and local policies, due to the challenge of coexistence and intercultural dialogue at a general level, particularly in education.

A presença significativa de funcionários estrangeiros nos serviços sociossanitários italianos coloca novos desafios à identidade e à integração profissional. Esta pesquisa-ação, que tem sua fundamentação teórica na psicanálise, descreve as representações culturalmente orientadas dos trabalhadores de uma instituição geriátrica e se propõe como um protótipo de laboratório formativo de partilha das diferentes visões da assistência aos idosos. Somente se o encontro multicultural gerar laços baseados no mútuo reconhecimento será possível estabelecer boas práticas "mestiças" de cuidado e cura em contextos institucionais.

The significant presence of foreign workers in the Italian social and sanitarian services brings new challenges to professional identity and integration. This action research, which has its theoretical foundation in psychoanalysis, describes the culturally oriented representations of workers of a geriatric institute and suggests a formative laboratory prototype of sharing of different views on the assistance for elderly. Only if the multicultural encounter forges ties based on mutual recognition will it be possible to establish good "mixed" practices of care and cure in institutional contexts.

A acolhida da diversidade das culturas foi sempre um grande problema para o ser humano, em razão da presença restritiva do etnocentrismo. Essa diversidade, porém, não constitui uma realidade negativa, mas um "fenômeno natural" e positivo. Assim como a diversidade das culturas, temos também diante de nós a diversidade das religiões e o rico pluralismo religioso. Torna-se hoje imprescindível acolher positivamente esse desafio, reconhecendo a dignidade da diferença e somando forças com as distintas tradições religiosas para construir um mundo melhor e mais digno, acalentado na paz e no respeito.

The acceptance of cultural differences has always been a great problem for human beings, due to the restrictive presence of ethnocentrism. This diversity, however, is not a negative reality, but a "natural" and positive phenomenon. Besides the diversity of cultures, there is also a diversity of religions and a rich religious pluralism before us. It is imperative, today, to positively embrace this challenge, recognizing the dignity of differences and joining forces with different religious traditions in order to build a better and more worthy world, enriched by peace and respect.

Este ensaio é uma tentativa de ler o complexo fenômeno da migração à luz da fé, encontrando nele as categorias - desenraizamento e acolhida - para uma nova compreensão da fé e dos fundamentos que inspiram a pastoral dos migrantes. A mobilidade humana como locus theologicus, "sinal dos tempos" e kairòs requer múltiplas perspectivas de leitura da experiência de desenraizamento e acolhida: antropológica, soteriológica, cristológica, eclesiológica, escatológica e assim por diante. Destes fundamentos decorrem consequencias não apenas para a pastoral específica dos migrantes, mas também para a reflexão pastoral e teológica em geral, uma vez que visam à edificação da Igreja e do Reino de Deus.

This article aims at reading the complex phenomenon of migration in the light of faith, identifying in it the categories - uprooting and welcoming - for a better understanding of faith and of the underlying foundations of pastoral ministry among migrants. Human mobility, as locus theologicus, «sign of the time» and kairòs, allows for multiple perspectives in interpreting the experience of being uprooted and welcomed: anthropological, soteriological, christological, ecclesiological, eschatological, etc. Consequences derive from these foundations, not only for the specific ministry among migrants, but also for pastoral ministry and theological reflection in general.

Este trabalho apresenta considerações e evidências sobre a inclusão de populações de estrangeiros em espaços metropolitanos. Parte-se do suposto que a alteridade seja um indicador de "democracia territorial". No Brasil, o Censo 2000 permite identificar certa tolerância étnica em relação ao migrante estrangeiro, como apontado por Mehta para Nova York. São Paulo e Rio de Janeiro, em função do próprio tamanho, abrigam uma grande diversidade de origens nacionais na migração internacional, ainda que exista uma elevada variação nos níveis de renda e no tipo de ocupação.

This work presents considerations and evidence about the inclusion of foreign populations in metropolitan areas. It is assumed that the acceptation of the other is an indicator of "territorial democracy". In Brazil, the Census 2000 enables to identify certain ethnic tolerance in relation to foreign migrant, as pointed out by Mehta for New York. São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, because of their own size, shelter a wide variety of national origins in international migration, although there is a high variation in income levels and types of occupation.

A crise econômica internacional desencadeada em 2008 produziu enormes efeitos sobre as migrações mundiais. Alguns estudos têm sido dedicados a esta temática. O objetivo deste artigo é refletir e discutir sobre a existência de um possível fluxo de retorno dos imigrantes brasileiros em Portugal ao país de origem. Os resultados desta investigação apontam para uma desaceleração do fluxo de entrada em Portugal, uma propensão significativa ao retorno, mas um volume efetivo de retorno inferior ao que seria teoricamente de esperar.

The international economic crisis triggered in 2008 produced major effects on global migration. The aim of this paper is to discuss the existence of a possible return flow of Brazilian immigrants in Portugal to the country of origin. The results of this investigation point to a slowdown in the inflows to Portugal, a significant propensity to return, but an actual volume of return smaller than would be theoretically expected.
