REM celebrates its 87th birthday

In January, REM celebrates its 87th birthday, and has no plans to enter the comfort zone, since those who run the magazine today maintain the ideals of the students who created it, which are presented in the very first REM Editorial:

It is another attempt to fulfill an academic dream in Ouro Preto. It was a constant concern of all generations, who passed through the "house of Gorceix", that there be a publication that facilitated their contact with the technical and scientific world.

Perhaps, nowadays, creating a technical publication does not present as many problems as it did in the 30s, especially being presented by students, but they did not bend in the face of difficulties, after some attempts to create a magazine:

"Auri-verde" and "Nossa Revista" marked two periods when the moment of victory seemed to have arrived, and they passed, and passed, leaving signs of the combative energy of those who led it, marking traces of the battle of the students from Vila Rica against their isolation, and their effort to make the steel tentacles that unite them to the great centers seem shorter.

Our ideas are still the same, and we hope to turn the current attempt into a lasting realization.

When the capital of the state moved from Ouro Preto to Belo Horizonte, evidently, Ouro Preto went through a period of decadence, but the willpower of the students, allied with the alumni, not only prevented the transfer of the Escola de Minas to Belo Horizonte, but finally, created a magazine:

The Revista da Escola de Minas has a dual purpose: to be a vehicle for lessons and observations by masters and engineers in general, whether of an original or didactic nature, and to stimulate a taste for technical culture among students.

As can be seen, the creation of REM, and the positive actions of young students, show that prioritizing time outside the classroom can and does generate more creative and more energizing activities:

We ask the reader for indulgence in criticizing the essay of the young men who are entering in the realm.

I am sure that this request from young people should be completed by a new request: LONG LIVE REM!
